Public Forum on Commons redesign tonight

Tonight the firm hired to redesign The Commons in Ithaca will be taking input from the public.  5:30-8:15pm in the Tompkins County Public Library, Borg Warner Room.

This is an opportunity to voice opinions about the look and usefulness of the redesign.  Also, an important topic being considered is the way art will be incorporated into the design.

If you attend, let us know what you think.

Gallery Night – Friday, July 3

Find the roundup for this Friday’s gallery night offerings here.

I think you need to be within a certain downtown area and be in an included art space to be considered officially part of “Gallery Night” as run by the Downtown Ithaca Alliance.  Many other art events/openings are scheduled on Gallery Night to take advantage of the crowds, but are not included in listings because of location or venue.  There are three such public art events/installations opening or being inaugurated this Friday:

Art in the Heart of the City, the outdoor public art collection, sponsored by Ithaca’s Public Art Commission and The Downtown Ithaca Alliance.  Opening reception is  from 5-8 pm at The Commons Amphitheatre. Four participating artists will be present.  At 6:30 local artist Rob Licht will offer a tour of the 2009 works, located all over downtown, from DeWitt Park to the Creek Walk and in-between.

Public Art Commission’s Green St. Windows installation by Brody Burroughs.  Not sure if there is an official opening or if the work is just being inaugurated.  Anyone have details?

to Let Art Program, curated by The Working Relationship and co-sponsored by The Downtown Ithaca Alliance and local landlords, installs mainly site-specific art works in vacant storefronts downtown.  Opening reception is 4-6pm at the Bernie Milton Pavilion on The Commons.  Walking tours of participating properties depart 4:30pm and 5:30pm. Participating collective, SP Weather Station delivers a talk, “Taxonomy of Taxonomies of Clouds,” in the amphitheater on The Commons at twilight, around 9pm.

libraryI just noticed these in front of the library.  Anyone know their story?  Are they part of Art in the Heart of the City?

Open Studios at Saltonstall Foundation

Summer is here and it’s time to see what artists the Saltonstall Foundation has brought in for residencies this year.   Here’s the announcement from the Saltonstall.  I’ve added links to artists web sites if they have them.   If you go see these talks/installations, let us know what you think by starting a conversation in the comments section!

Each summer the Summer Fellowship Program of the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts grants one-month residencies at the Saltonstall Arts Colony to New York State artists. Two writers, one photographer and two visual artists are in residence for each month-long session. On the last Sunday of each session there is an Open Studio, a time when the public is invited to come to the colony to see and hear what the artists have been working on, and become more familiar with the colony, the Foundation, and its mission.

This year the Saltonstall Foundation has extended the Summer Fellowship Program to include the month of September, thereby granting residencies to 20 New York State artists in all. This means there are 4 opportunities for you to meet the artists and enjoy an afternoon at the Saltonstall Arts Colony, listening to the writers and poets read from their most recent work, and visiting the studios of the visual artists.

You are cordially invited to join us on one or all of the following Sundays from 2PM – 4PM. The reception begins at 2PM. At 2:30 each writer will read. After the readings, the visual artists will invite you to visit their studios. Light refreshments will be served and there will be time for conversations with the artists. As a tent is set-up on the lawn for the occasion, the events take place no matter the weather.
