Gareth James is a British artist who has been based in New York since 1997. His work has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and Europe including Portikus (Frankfurt), Kunstwerke (Berlin), the Institute of Contemporary Art (London), and P. S. 1 Center for Contemporary Art (New York). He has had recent solo exhibitions at Galerie Christian Nagel, K Franco Soffiantino Arte Contemporanea, Torino, and Elizabeth Dee Gallery (New York). His writing has been published in journals such as Artforum, Texte zur Kunst, and Made in USA, and he has curated several exhibitions including a traveling retrospective of the television and video works of Jean-Luc Godard. James’s publications include I Said I Love. That Is the Promise. and … Ical Krbbr Prodly Prsnts Gart Jas, Jon Klsy, Josf Stra. James has taught at the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Study Program, the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and Columbia University, where he is currently an assistant professor in visual art. James was a founding member of Orchard, a co-operatively organized gallery in New York’s Lower East Side from 2005 to 2008 and is a founding editor of Scorched Earth, along with fellow artists Sam Lewitt and Cheyney Thompson, a forthcoming journal devoted to questions concerning drawing.

As part of their Arts for All Marathon art scholarship fundraiser (Sep. 28 – Oct 24, 2009), the Community School of Music & Arts has two Calls for Artists.

First, all artists are encouraged to kick-start their creativity and create their own 26-day artistic marathons as part of the Arts for All Marathon. Artists can sign-up here.  Additionally, for those artists wishing to use four feet (wide) of CSMA gallery wall space, please describe in your sign-up application how your project will keep the wall space filled while monetizing your project to raise funds for arts scholarships. Gallery space is almost filled but some slots are still available.

Second, all Ithacans, but especially all artists, are encouraged to make art on the ubiquitous Post-It (or sticky) note, donate it to CSMA from now until October 20, 2009, where all donated art will be hung on the CSMA gallery walls starting Monday, September 28, 2009 and sold on Friday, October 23, 2009 at our Opening/Closing/Purchasing Night Party (5:30 – 7:00pm preview; 7:00 – 9:00pm purchasing). Here’s info, copied directly from their email, on the New York Foundation for the Arts Artists’ Fellowships and upcoming info sessions (I’m just including info on the regional sessions):

Artists’ Fellowships are $7,000 cash awards made to individual originating artists living and working in the state of New York for unrestricted use. Grants are awarded in 16 artistic disciplines, with applications accepted in eight categories each year. Since the awards began in 1985, NYFA has awarded over $22 million to over 3,688 artists. Peer review panels select approximately 100 Fellows each year, the goal being to buy recipients creative time to continue making work.

Each year NYFA offers free informational seminars across New York state to explain the Artists’ Fellowships application process. Please see the list below to find a seminar near you and check nyfa.org/afp for updates and new
locations. While the seminars are not mandatory, NYFA offers valuable information about the application and review process, and we encourage applicants to attend.

NYFA’s online application will be posted in early September, please go to
nyfa.org/afp to apply after September 9th.

This is really exciting for local artists,  most of whom don’t use the community directly in the creation of their work.  I’ve thought it was unfortunate that the CAP IIs had to be restricted in this way, but understand those parameters come from the original funders, not CAP.

The Stimulus Awards recognize that artists, working alone, who create art that addresses the concerns of the community, or addresses our history, culture, politics, ethics, sciences, etc. are making work of great benefit to our local community.
